Fall STAR Testing

Fall STAR Testing
Posted on 09/15/2020

Dear Parents/Guardians,

Over the next two weeks, all children at Nottingham West will participate in a screening assessment in math and reading using a tool called Star Enterprise, a product of Renaissance Learning. The Star assessment is a short, adaptive assessment which means that it adjusts to student responses.  If students answer correctly for a given number of questions, questions become more challenging.  If students repeatedly provide incorrect responses, questions become easier.  Results from this assessment are readily available to teachers and the data provides specific information for teachers about student achievement toward meeting standards within these two subject areas.   Teachers and support staff will use performance data from this assessment to help target instruction.  As a school, we will also use student performance data to determine children who require additional support.

After school-wide administration of assessments is complete, you will receive reports of your child’s performance.  The reports will provide you with a percentile rank, an instructional reading level, and suggestions for at home practice and help.

If assessment results indicate that your child requires additional support, we will contact you.  Support groups will be established in reading and will meet daily during a scheduled pull-out time. We expect that this will begin within a few weeks after testing.  These groups will remain fluid, with some students exiting support when they achieve progress and others entering based on need.

All students will take the STAR assessment again in January and May to track student progress.  Children who are receiving additional support will take the assessment at approximately six week intervals to monitor progress.   If you have any questions, please contact your child’s classroom teacher.

Yours in Education,

Scott G. Baker
