Yvette, a favorite amongst Alvirne students, gave birth to two healthy twin calves on January 4, 2012. The first born was a heifer (a girl) and minutes later the second born was a bull (a boy). Mom and babies are doing great!
Did you know there are two types of twins? Fraternal and identical. Fraternal twins originate from two separate eggs where as identical twins occur when one fertilized egg splits. Fraternal twins are more common than identical. Only 10% of twin claves are identical. In addition fraternal twins that are of different sexes, the female is very unlikely to be fertile. It is estimated that 95% of the heifers born twin to a bull are not fertile and are called freemartins.
If there are any further questions or you would like set up a tour of the farm please contact Lesley Bassett at 603-886-1260 extension 2560 or lbassett@alvirnehs.org.

Students from Alvirne High School along with several other supporters are taking part in the Special Olympics New Hampshire Penguin Plunge. Students have joined SONH as part of Project UNIFY ® which is a project to foster respect, dignity and advocacy for people with intellectual disabilities.
Our team consists of over 90 members that need the support of our community. We are encouraging more students, staff, and members of the community to join in the support of the Hudson Special Olympics team by either plunging themselves or donating to one of our team members.
